[North West] portion of the County of Peebles A Parish in the County of Peebles, bounded on the North by the County of Edinburgh, on the East by Eddleston, on the South by Kirkurd, Stobo, & Lyne and on the West by the Parish of Linton, it is about 9 Miles long from North to South and about 3 Miles broad from East to West, the probable area is about 11,300 Acres, one third of which is under cultivation. A ridge of gently ascending hills extend between the Lyne & the Tarth affording excellent pasturage for Sheep. The Lyne Water, flowing in a Southern direction, runs 2¼ Miles along the Western Boundary and 3¾ through the interior, where it is joined by the Dead & Flemington Burns; The Tarth Water for nearly 3 miles forms the Southern boundary of the Parish. Several rich beds of Marl have been discovered, a species of Til abounds which Contains alum, Veins of Iron Ore occur on the lands of La Mancha one of them Contains a considerable quantity of Native leadstone, Several Manganese, and all with one exception, are the finest grain Ore, or Haematities and that grain in Mixture. |
