Here (Megget) stood the tower of Piers Cockburn a noted freebooter
who was hanged over his own gateway by order of James V in the course of his
Judiciary Mid 1529. Piers was buried in a spot called the Chapel Knowe
which was flouted and melosed a few years ago by the late Mr Murray
of Henderland. A style in the wall gives access to the tomb. Over the grave is
a slab on which is carved the figure of a Sword of Justice and some other emblems
with the inscription "Here lyis perys of Cokburne and hys wyfe Mariory". Chambers Guide to Peebles.
