[Situation] A few chains west of the village of Linton
The arable field on the summit of which is Kettle Hill. Before this ground was brought into cultivation, there was no defined boundary for the market; but Kettle Hill, and along its base is considered the market place. At present, the field in which the hill is, and as many more fields as the stock may require (if the fields were even in crop) the public are entitled to, as of old. At one time there were five markets held every year, but now there is only one, which is held in June, and is called the Hay market. William Forbes Medwyn House is the Proprietor of the ground on which the market is held, the Earl of Wemyss is the superior, and draws a custom of 1s [shilling] /1d [penny] per score sheep. |

[Situation] A few chains north of the parish church, and in north side of the Grave Yard
The site of the old parish church, of Linton, is situated in the middle of the present graveyard It was pulled down and the present one was built in the same year (1782) The old church was very well decorated, and had several statues of Saints etc; but were all destroyed when the present church was erected: the heritors of the time, ordered them all to be defaced, and built into the walls, so as not to be seen; but when the new church was complete, they had it roughcast so as to cover any portions, of the statues that might be visible. |

[Situation] In the E. [East] side of the parish of Linton
A Village of Considerable size Situated on the Main Road leading from Edinburgh to Biggar, about 16 Miles South of the former, The Village is Composed of One principal street. running North and South, with a few small Lanes or Alleys going to the right and left The houses are very irregularly built their height ranging from One to two Storeys And in Several instances having their Gables to the street, which would lead a person to Suppose the Village to be of some Antiquity. It is the second largest Town in the County and has an Annual Fair or Market about the end of June for the Sale of sheep, There is no trade or Manufacture Carried On in the Village, therefore the inhabitants for the greater part are engaged in agricultural pursuits, There are two Inns or Public Houses in the Village, together with a few Grocer and Draper's Shops. It is the property of different individuals who hold their tenure by feu from the Patron or Principal, The Earl of Wemyss There are three places for Divine worship in the Village viz. [videlicet] the Established United Presbyterian And Episcopal Churches together with four Schools. so that the children have every facility afforded them for their education |
