005 [Situation] About 35 chains ENE [East North East] of Carlopshill

Two large, perpendicular rocks, situated in the middle of the village of Carlops; one on each side of the road leading through the village. they used to hang over the road at one time, but of late they have been greatly reduced for the purpose on mending roads. Tradition states that Mause, (the Carline or Witch, of the Pastoral of the Gentle Shepherd) leaped from one rock, to the other on some occasion; and that, to that circumstance they owe their name.
