OS1/24/20/20 UPPER CAIRN Upper Cairn Upper Cairn Upper Cairn Mr J. Miller Shepherd Farneyhaugh Mr Brown Farmer, North Slipperfield Mr Plenderleith Farnyhaugh 004 [Situation] In the S [South] Western portion of Linton Ph [Parish] and on the east side of North Muir A Pile of loose stones about twenty feet high and about sixty feet in circumference at the base. This is Evidently a Sepulchural cairn, erected to mark the burial place of some distinguished warrior who fell in battle here. No account, written or tradition exists to throw any light upon the origin of this Cairn, but the general opinion in the locality (which is shared by antiquaries who have examined the Pile) favours the above supposition. It has not been opened, but other Cairns which stood in the neighbourhood were found to contain funeral urns and one of them a small sword or dagger, flint headed arrows have also been found in the vicinity of these cairns. From the appearance of the ground it is probable that an Engagement took place here at some remote period, as the surface presents numerous little mounds formed of stones covered with earth which were probably [????] such is the general belief in the neighbourhood. A small stream which rises from the Rumbling Well and flows in a S. W. [South. West.] direction to its Junction with Tarth Water forming during portion of its Course the Boundary between the Counties of Peebles and Lanark. It falls into the Tarth near Dolphinton.

[South West] Side of Linton parish and near the S W [South West] Side of Mendick Hill. An elevated ridge of an elongated form rising Suddenly from the hollow through which flows the Garvald Burn and extending upwards near to the base of Mendick Hill. Of the origin of the name nothing is Known, it's shape bears but little resemblance to the Article whose name it bears.

Miller Shepherd Farmeyhaugh Mr Brown North Slipperfield 004 [Situation] East Side of North North Muir forming the Source of Garvald Burn This is a pure spring of excellent water issuing from a rock on the side of the road leading from North Slipperfield to the [????] of Fairneyhaugh. From gushing forth with a rumbling sound it has received its present name. There is no erection or Enclosure of any kind over this Spring nor has it ever been of religious or medicinal celebrity Garvald Burn commences at this Well.

Miller Shepherd Farneyhaugh Mr Brown Farmer Nth [North] Slipperfield Mr Plenderleith Farnyhaugh 004 [Situation] On the S E Side of North Muir. This is a Cairn similar to the Upper one only it's dimmensions are a little Smaller. Nothing has been found in this Cairn, but it is probable that when fully opened Urns or other Remains will be discovered. Numerous Cartloads of stones have been taken from these heaps to build places to and out of the Upper Cairn An entire Sheepfold has been erected. There cannot be a doubt that these are Sepulchral Cairns; from their Size and appearance they have stood here for ages. They are called "Upper" and "Nether" Cairns respectively from their position to the farm-house of Fairnyhaugh.

OS1/24/20/25 CAIRN (Site of) Cairn (Site of) Mr Plenderleith Fernyhaugh John Millar Fernyhaugh 004 [Situation] 4 Chains north of Ferney haugh This applies to a Place within a few perches of the farm house of Fernyhaugh where a large cairn of Stones once stood. The stones were removed for the purpose of making walls and at the time of their removal there was found in the Cairn, a short sword or dagger, together with an Urn containing some ashes.
