This is a neat little cottage one story high, (at present the residence of Thomas French, Shepherd,) situated in a solitary sheltered situation on the farm of Nether Horsburgh, and about a mile North of it, in the valley between Bright Hill and Middle Hope Rig, close to Hope Burn to which it gives its name. There is a small garden attached.

At one period, still remembered by some of the old inhabitants there stood the remains of a Br[... ] Camp, close to the position of the Trig[onometrical] Station shewn on tra[ce] 2. No trace of it remains as the ground has been cultivated. Its site is covered with rough pasture.

The parish boundary between Peebles and Inverleithen, runs nearly, through the centre of its summit.

[West by North] from Nether Horsburgh. This Hill derives its name from its vicinity to Horsburgh Castle. It is cultivated nearly to the top, with the exception of its Northern side being covered with heathy pasture. On the Summit is the remains of a Camp. On its South Eastern Side there is a small plantation of mixed wood, chiefly fir, which appears to have been originally intended as a sheep shelter.

[County] map 013 [Situation] About ⅝ of a Mile S.E [South East] of Bught Hill. This a farm house three stories high, with suitable farm buildings and a vegetable garden attached. The dwelling house appears to have been built at different periods - the oldest portion was originally intended for the residence of the Proprietor (James Ballantyne Esqr. Holylee,) it was afterwards, with the present addition, converted into a farm steading. It is occupied at present by Mr James Plenderleith, & appears to be kept in indifferent repair. There is also a corn mill, as shewn on trace 6.

The remains of this old Castle lie immediately North adjoining the farm Steading of Nether Horsburgh, to[whi[ch] it gives its name. Judging from the great thickness of the walls which sti[ll] remain, it must have been built a like defence, as well as, observation. Litt[le]? is Known of its history in the Neighbourhood; but there can be no doubt, from its appearance & situation, that it was one of [the] Castles with watch-towers &c, which at one [time]? existed along the whole course of the rive[r] usually on different sides alternately an[d] within sight of each, so as to act as reley beacons in warning the country of an inva[sion] from the border. It is in a much better st[ate]? of preservation than Horsburgh Castle fr[om]? which, and as its name implies w[e]? may infer that it belongs to a mor[e] recent period. This name applies to the ruins of what was formerly Horsburgh Castle a seat of the Horsburghs of that Ilk. It is in a state of utter decay, all that remains being a small portion of the walls. It has never been a place of much importance, and seems rather to have been a strong mansion, than a Castle proper. Of its history nothing is known.
