Tradition says "that in former times a piper engaged to play the pipes without intermission for a wager from Lauder to Peebles a distance of 26 Miles and got only as far as the Spot marked "The Piper's Grave" when he fell down exhausted and died on the Spot as it happened to be upon the boundary between the Counties of Edinburgh and Peebles, he was interred here hence the name,
