[County] of Peebles A parish in the N E. [North East] of Peeblesshire &. partly in the North of Selkirkshire. bounded on the North East by Edinburghshire and Selkirkshire of Stow Parish, on the South by the Tweed which devides it from Yarrow Parish in Selkirkshire And Traquair Parish in Peebles-shire, And on the west by the Parishes of Peebles and Eddlestone, it is About 8 Miles long by 5 miles wide, the surface gradually rises from the Tweed, to the Northern extremity, and has in general a broken, rugged And precipitous Appearance -- The largest stream of the many which rise in this Parish and fall into the Tweed is the Leithen Water, which nearly devides it into two equal parts -- At the mouth of Almost every defile throughout the district Tower-houses are to be met with presenting a Ruinous appearance, on a rising ground in the immediate Vicinity of Inverleithen are the remains of what was once a strong fortification, There is a Mineral Spring in the Village of Inverleithen, which has, of late been much frequented and long used for the Cure of Ophthalmic Complaints, Old Wounds, dyspeptic and bilious Complaints. The present Church was erected in the year 1786 and the living is in the gift of Patrick Booth, Esqr. There are no detached portions of any parish within Inverleithen nor are any detached portions of Inverleithen within any other parish There is a small detached part of Selkirkshire within that part of the parish which lies in Peebles shire but is still a part of the parish.

[Note] -- This parish name is pronounced and Spelled Innerleithen in the Country and is also generally the usage in writing and almost all the intelligent understand that Inver would be the Correct form or spelling of the prefix it being evidently the Gaelic Inbhir which is pronounced very like the word Inver -- [signed] R D Kerr CaptRE [Captain, Royal Engineers] [Note] -- The Celtic derivation has nothing to say to its present orthography. The Origin of the name is derived, from the Leithen Water, & the numerous Hopes or Glens in its Vicinity. Its northern limits bound from Dundreich, along the parish boundary until it reaches Windlestraw Law, from thence in a S.W. [South West] direction to Gledknowe, Innerleithen Common, & Lee Pen --- From Lee Pen it passes over the chair of the hills running Northerly, by Mouse Dean Head, Clog Knowe & Dunslair Heights - where it's common with the parish boundary till it gets to DunDreich.
