016 | [Situation] About 13 Chains East from River Tweed This is a large block of whinstone Standing on End in a Field of Mr Stordart's Farm of Drummelzier Haugh on the South side of the Tweed. It is about 5 1/2 feet high, above the surface; and about 2 1/2 feet thick. It is said to have been Erected to Commemorate some Important event, but there are no traditions respecting it. It is very probably in Commemoration of Some Battle or Skirmish; or to mark where some great Chieftain fell: it being in a plain in the vicinity of Thanes Castle, Drummelzier Castle, and the Hill Fort on Dreva Craig. so say the authorities quoted. |
