[Situation] In the Western portion of the County of Peebles
A Parish in the County of Peebles which Comprehends the Old Parishes of Broughton, Glenholm and the Southern or larger division of Kilbucho, but strictly identified on their ecclesiastical Connection and Statistics. This United Parish is bounded on the West and North West by Cutler [Culter] and Skirling, on the North by Kirkurd, on the East and North East by Stobo, and on the South and South East by Drummelzier. It is 9½ Miles long and about 3½ Miles broad. The superficial Area is about 20,390 acres of which upwards of ¼ is under Cultivation, the Remainder is principally under pasture for sheep and black Cattle. The surface of the ground is beautifully irregular and well watered |

This is the Remains of what appears to have been a Very large Fort or Camp. It has been nearly all destroyed, chiefly by the Turnpike Road passing through it. There were several Covered drains removed from the excavations and also a Primitive Mill or Quorn This Fort is in a plain in view of several Camps or Forts on the Surrounding Hills. |

This is the Remains of what appears to have been a Very strong place of defence. It was surrounded by three Concentric Circles and an outer line of Circumvallation: the remains are in a very good state of preservation. It occupies a Commanding position on the south End of Langlaw Hill, in View of Several of the surrounding old Forts etc. with which this Fort appears to have been Connected. There is a small Camp - one circle - on the Farm of Kirkbank which is supposed to have been an Outpost or lookout Station in Connection with this Fort. Mr. Ritchie thinks this the Macbeth's Castle Mentioned in stat acct [Statistical Account] but it is not Known by any name |

This is pointed out as the site of an ancient Fort or Camp, which is said to have been of great strength, and defended by two or three Ramparts & Compound of Earth & loose stones. It is altogether destroyed: the only Indications now remaining are Some Confused heaps of earth which are overgrown with grass. The County Road passed over it which was the chief cause of its destruction. |
