011 | [Situation] About 1¼ Miles N.W. [North West] from Broughton This is the Remains of what appears to have been a Very strong place of defence. It was surrounded by three Concentric Circles and an outer line of Circumvallation: the remains are in a very good state of preservation. It occupies a Commanding position on the south End of Langlaw Hill, in View of Several of the surrounding old Forts etc. with which this Fort appears to have been Connected. There is a small Camp - one circle - on the Farm of Kirkbank which is supposed to have been an Outpost or lookout Station in Connection with this Fort. Mr. Ritchie thinks this the Macbeth's Castle Mentioned in stat acct [Statistical Account] but it is not Known by any name |
