W.C. Smith Schoolmaster Pierowall James Rendall Longhouse James Logie Postmaster Pierowall 075 Applies to the Ruins of an ancient castle, Situated about 3/4 of a mile west of Pierowall and about 30 yards South of the farm house of "Noltland". It is approached from "Pierowall" by the Public Road to "Noup". It dates from 1422 And when in possession of Sir Gilbert Balfour of "Queen Marys" Household, it was prepared by Royal order for the reception of the unfortunate Queen on her escape from "Loch Leven Castle". As a fortress it is said to have been unmatched. The walls are of an average thickness of ten links, cut in many places by Loopholes. At the back of the farm house of Noltland there is the remains of an entrenchment evidently in conjunction with the Castle. From its Summit (which is often ascended by visitors) a good view can be obtained of the Surrounding country.
