123 | Applies to that part of the parish of Walls lying South of the water of Longhope, Bounded on the South by the "Pentland Firth" and on the east by Cantie Sound and Kirk Hope, on the north and west by Longhope and "The Ayre", "South Walls" is separated from the island of Hoy during Spring tides, for the Space of about two hours, with flux tide by a narrow channel of about 100 yards wide, but during neap tides the pedestrian can find his way dry-Shod for Several days, during both high and low water. The principle buildings which are of importance in this district, are, the "Parish Church" a neat and substantial building, erected 1852 and Seated to contain over 500, also an elegant New public School, Custom House, Post office, Lighthouse on Cantiehead, and a battery of considerable importance protecting the entrance to the excellent harbour of Longhope.................over |
