Applies to the site of an ancient Chapel situated in the district of Kirbuster about 18 Chains north from Brettabreck & nearly half a mile west from Upper Arion, The history of this object is lost, but it is generally believed to have been used at a period when popery prevailed here, The 14th Century is the period to which it is popularly ascribed, From the fact that mention fails to be made of this Chapel in "Rentale Orchadie pro Regs et Episcops", it is considered to have fallen into disuse prior to 1595, when those were compiled, |

A pile of stones & rubbish situated near the centre of an arable field about 6 chains N. from the farm offices of Redland, on the property of Mr. Corrigall of Arion, In 1866, (prior to which the knowe was of a circular form and extending about 12 yards further to the eastward) this object was excavated under the direction of Dr. [Doctor] Farrer F.S.A. & the late Mr. G. Petrie of Kirkwall, who after removing a quantity of rubbish found a circular wall built of large square stones, and of great thickness & strength, & about 50 feet in diameter, The wall was found to have an entrance, from the east, about 2 1/2 feet square & on a level with the ordinary surface, On reaching about the centre of the circle the excavators came upon a stone staircase leading downwards, spirally, to a depth of 20 feet terminating in a well which appeared to be cut out of the rock & which was found to contain very fine & wholesome spring water, A great quantity of ashes & bones of animals were found in the interior of the Circle, It is supposed to be the remains of a Brough or Picts House, |

The remains of this building were taken away when the place was cultivated a few years ago: But as tradition supplies us with nothing but the peculiar name, nothing can be ascertained relating to its existence further than the supposition among the inhabitants that it was the residence of a Scandinavian Chief who lived and ruled according to his will. No period is assigned for this object nearer than that it is said to have existed prior to the 14th. Century. |

An antiquity in the shape of a raised mound of earth and loose stones about 8ft. in height and 30ft. in diameter situated on the left bank of the Burn of Streather, and about 1/4 mile west of the farm of Straithie, further information or traditionary remarks cannot be gleaned concerning it. The object is believed to be the remains of an ancient burial mound, It is also supposed to have extended southwards some yards further than it now does, but the Burn of Streather which washes against its base is said to be carrying quantities of the earth away so frequently that it is expected to be entirely demolished in the course of a few years.
At present a fine section of the mound is exposed to view (from the quantity of matter the stream has recently removed) in which the difference of strata between the original surface and the artificial accumulation is seen to advantage, |

106 |
A rude block of hard unpolished stone on which there is no mark of an instrument; without carving, inscription, or hieroglyphics and is plainly the monument of an early age when people were ignorant of arts and letters. It stands about 6ft. above ground about 2 1/2 in breadth, and nearly a foot thick and is about the same measurement at the top as it is at the surface of the ground; is situated in an arable field on an eminence commanding an extensive view and opposing the "Standing Stones" of Stenness its distance is about 1/2 mile north of "Howe" Farmhouse, close to the public road leading from "Stromness" to "Kirkwall" and about 1/2 mile N.N.West of the "Bridge of Waith" This stone is supposed to be of the same origin as those of Stenness and various others throughout "Orkney" and for what purpose or what design they were erected, antiquity furnishes us with no account, records are silent, and tradition, to which recourse must be sometimes had, in the penury of other evidence, ventures not in this case to hazard an opinion
Some have supposed them intended to mark spots that contained the bones, or the ashes, of a beloved prince, a brave chieftain, or a dear-departed friend, or to serve as a boundary between the territories of one great chief and another, while others again imagined them designed to perserve the remembrance of some noted event, that concerned the safety, the honour, or the advantage of the community; since no tumuli, urns, or graves, have ever been found near them they cannot certainly be considered as memorials of the dead, nor is it more likely that they were intended to mark the limits of contiguous proprietors as landmarks, objects equally well calculated to serve the purpose, could have been erected with infinitely less labour.
If therefore they were not intended to serve the purpose of places of worship they were most likely raised to perserve the remembrance of some fortunate event, or perpetuate the memory of some noble action; and the rough simplicity of their appearance sufficiently justifies us in referring them to an early age and to the first inhabitants of the Orkney islands, Abridged from"Peterkin's Notes of Orkney". |

A supposed Picts House & which bears externally the form of a truncated cone & the height of which is about 14 feet and the circumference at the base about 300ft., internally it consists of loose stones, and rubbish; but whether like other supposed Picts Houses throughout the country, it is surrounded with one, or two, circular walls, cells, or apartments, is as yet unknown as there has been no digging sufficiently deep, to discover the mystery
Its outside is covered with a thick sward of fine grass and on a superficial view has much the appearance of a large "tumulies"
On the summit stands a small square tower erected as a land-mark
It stands isolated from any other antiquity on a declivity commanding a view of "Maeshowe" and the "Standing Stones" of Stromness. A little to the west is situated the farmhouse of "Howe" which is named after "The Howe" and is about 1/2 mile West of the Bridge of Waith |

The passing of the drain through a hillock (which, since the discovery, is considered to be the remains of a large tumulus) necessitating its being cut to a depth of about 12 feet at the point indicated, The cist is about 4 feet in length and breadth, and 2 1/2 feet in depth, and is formed of slabs of stone about 3 inches in thickness, each side being formed of a single slab, Some of the stones were broken at the time of its excavation, but it is still sufficiently preserved to enable its original form to be distinctly seen, When opened it was found to contain three human Skeletons (afterwards, on their transmission to the Antiquarian Museum Edinburgh, pronounced to be that of

About the Site of the Chapel described upon the other side of this list and indicated by Symbol upon trace is known to have existed a place of interment which is generally supposed to have been in connection with, and used about the same time as the Chapel.
The supposed existence of a Burial Ground may be confirmed by the fact that when the field was cultivated, and the remains of the Chapel removed, there were several indications of the existence of human remains brought to view

"In the year 1815 (should be 1817) Stromness was constituted a Burgh of Barony; and two magistrates, with nine councillors, have since held authority in it; but having no funds, and there being no jail nearer than Kirkwall, their power is greatly curtailed." Ext. from New Stat [Statistical] acc. [account]
The Lindsay police act is now adopted.
"The town of Stromness is a seaport and a burgh of Barony, It stands on the sloping skirts of high ground, along the west side of a beautiful bay, 14 miles west by south of Kirkwall, 23 miles north-west of Duncansbay-head, and 29 north-north-east of Thurso, It is nearly a mile long, and very irregularly built, The principal street runs in a zigzag manner from end to end of it and is very narrow |

narrow in some places, but tolerably maeadamized, Many of the houses between this street and the beach stand within high-water mark and have tiny bulwarks, quays or jetties for the unloading of boats, and for facility of fishing, The bay on which the town stands is a natural harbour, safer and more commodious that the great majority of the harbours in Britain. It extends upwards of a mile from south to north, and is entered by a passage 1/4 of a mile wide, but expands in the interior to a width of half-a-mile, and it has a firm clay bottom, and sufficient depth of water for vessels of 1000 tons burden, and is sheltered from the violence of every wind, The pier has 18 feet of water in spring tides," Ext from Fullerton's Gazetteer.
The street is now paved with flags
