[Reverend] Dr. [Doctor] Clouston, Sandwick New Stat. [Statistical] Account of Scotland 100 A group of 11 tumuli (remains of) to which the following extract from "New Statistical Account of Scotland" refers, "Barrows or tumuli are particularly numerous in Sandwick, I believe there are more than one hundred, though it would be neither easy nor useful to count them, Eight of these, situated on the Common, have been opened during during the last year, A minute description of each would be tedious; but a brief account of the most important, which I opened in company with most of the other office-bearers of the Orkney Natural History Society, must be interesting to the antiquarian, The first, (marked A on trace) which was largest of a numerous cluster between Voy and Lyking, was 50 yards in circumference, and about 7 1/2 feet high, It was formed of a wet adhesive clay, On reaching the centre, we found a large flag, which formed the cover; and on raising it up, the grave appeared as free from injury, and pieces of bone as white and clean as if formed only the preceding day, At its end, which lay north-east by east, was an urn, inverted flower-pot; & at its other end, about a hat-ful of bones immixed with ashes, which had been burnt and broken small, none being more than two inches long and one broad, covered by a stone of irregular shape, about one foot across, It was sprinkled with a peculiar mossy-looking substance, of a brown colour, white ashes, which seemed from the small, when burnt, to be animal matter, The surface (Cont. on the other side)

OS1/23/17/170 Parish of Sandwick Orkney (Contd. from the other side) The surface of the urn is dark, not unlike burnt cork, and seems to be rude earthenware, into the composition of which, bits of stone enter liberally, It contained nothing that we could perceive, and soon fell to pieces; but I put them together with Roman Cement; and it is now in the Society's museum, with part of the bones," Signed: A.McDonald 2nd. OS1/23/17/196 THE RING OF BOOKAN The Ring The Ring The Ring The Ring The Ring The Ring of Bookan Mr. James Firth Farmer Bockan Mr William Sinclair Farmer Buckan Mr Peter Muir Farmer Howan, James Robertson Esqr. [Esquire] of Lyking Mr William Sinclair Farmer Ness Captain Thomas' Antiquities of Stennis 100 A circle that seems a miniature of that of Stenness without the stones surrounded by a ditch about 12ft. wide 6ft. deep and about 219 yards in circumference outside of the ditch. "Extract from new St. [Statistical] Account of Scotland", In its present state it is only a little more than a semicircle, the east side of which has been cut away and converted into arable land It stands on an eminence about 1/8 of a mile S.S.W of Buchan and about 1 mile north of the "Standing Stones of Stenness". It is difficult to say what class of antiquities this object may be ascribed to, the prevailing belief is that it has been a Picts' House from its outwards appearance it does not resemble any that are known as such throughout the the country neither does it appear like any of the Broughs or Duns as is termed in the Western Highlands, It has never been properly excavated but a small opening has been made by a farmer in the neighbourhood who discovered a cell covered on the top by a flag which formed the roof and the walls of uncemented masonry, sufficiently large to hold a man in a stooping position so that it can not have been intended for a place of habitation but might have been used as a storehouse in connection with the Picts dwelling places, No objects of antiquity have been discovered here neither can any further information be gleaned relative to its origin

[Esquire] of Lyking 100 This tumulus stands about 30ft in height and about 280ft. in circumference at the base and is plainly the rude memorials of persons of note in early days "The most ancient method of disposing of the dead was by interment. The earliest Greeks adopted this custom; in which they were imitated by the Romans in the infancy of their state, and the Celts a very ancient people seem also to have preferred this method; and in the graves of illustrious persons they gathered heaps of stones into a pile which they termed "Cromlichs" (tumuli) to distinguish them from those of the multitude, The remains of people of the same eminence among the Gothic tribes were treated in a different manner. These varied in size according to the rank of the person interred, hence the number of these tumuli spread over the country inhabited by branches of ancient people". (From Barry's History of Orkney) The signification of this word may be easily arrived at "Skae" a proper name in Scandinavia, and to this very day is common in Orkney Frue 'a maiden' who very likely have been interred in this tumulus Its position is 5 chains S.W of "The Ring" and about 15 chains S.W. of Buckan near the shore of the "Loch of Stenness"
