This is the most northerly Island of the north isles of Orkney and lies 2 1/2 miles north of Taftness in Sanday and 15 miles east-north-east of the nearest part of Papa Westray. Its length from north to south is 3 1/2 miles its mean breadth a little upwards of 1 mile and its superficial extent is about 4 square miles. There is communication with Sanday once a week (weather permitting) by means of a small ferry boat which carried the mails but as the Sound which divides the Island from Sanday is very dangerous in nacigation the communication is very uncertain especially in winter. The shores of the Island are very flat and rocky and |

and afford a large quantity of Sea weed from which the inhabitants manufacture Kelp on behalf of the Proprietor. There are a great number of small or wild sheep on the Island and it astonishes the stranger to see these small animals feeding upon the Seaweed along the shore which forms their principal food. The whole Island with the exception of the north end is surrounded by a stone or Sea-wall which is often knocked down by the Sea and the tenants are bound to rebuild it. There are several Picts houses and other ancient tumuli on the Island, and numbers of Stone Coffins have been dug up from time to time. The Island has been supplied with a Lighthouse having a revolving Light which flashes every 10 Seconds, a description of which is given elsewhere. The whole Island is the property of William Traill Esquire of Woodwick M.D. and in quoad civilia [ underlined] ecclesiastical reckoning belongs to the parish quoad Sacra[underlined]. The parish Church is a parliamentary one. There is also a Free Church and a good public School. |
