MASS TOWER | Mass Tower | Mr Millar Surveyor, Kirkwall Mr Petrie, Kirkwall Mr Heddle, Kirkwall |
108 | This Tower is situated at the North Western extremity of the Bishop's Palace, and measures about eighty feet in circumference and about one hundred feet in height, the top of which is very dilapidated. It is circular without, but square within. It was built by Bishop Reid in 1540 and on the outside of the north wall there is a stone statue of himself. An extensive view can be obtained from the top, but the stairs up to it are so ruinous that it is dangerous to venture. |
