STONE CIST FOUND A.D. 1853 [Pickaquoy] | Stone Cists found here A.D. 1853 | Mr George Petrie Kirkwall Mr Peace Kirkwall Mr Spence Bookseller Kirkwall. |
108 | Applies to a barrow or Tumulus opened at Pickaquoy in 1853, by James Farrer Esquire. It contained two graves or stone cists separated from each other by a rude wall four feet thick. The largest cist was 8 feet long by 4 feet 6 inches wide. The smaller cist measured 6 feet 4 inches in length by 4 feet in breadth, and was subdivided lengthways into two equal compartments by stones set on edge. The direction of the cells longitudinally was east and west. About 1 foot 9 inches distant from the west end of the north wall of the largest cell, a stone, with a small cup-like cavity on one side surrounded by 2 concentric circles and a semi circle, was found built on end in the wall. Another long slab was found having 13 similar small cavities along one of its edges, and a rather larger about the centre of one of its sides. |
