This name is applied to a gigantic and lofty insulated pillar of rock the arches disappeared by the action of the sea and about 450 feet in height. It stands out so prominently from the bold and rocky coast near which it stands as to form a distinct feature of the landscape from the Caithness coast. The name was given it by sailors whom it has long served as a landmark and who discovered in its appearance some resemblance to the human form:- hence the name. It is situated on the west coast of the island of Hoy , about 3/4 mile north of Rora Head and the same distance north west of Moorfea Hill. |
