Flotta, a parish comprehending the inhabited islands of Flotta, Fara, Switha, Calf of Flotta, & Risa. It lies wholly between Scapa Flow on the north, Pentland Firth on the south, Sound of Hoxa on the east, & Cantick Sound, Long Hope, & the island of Hoy on the west.
The Island of Flotta lies nearly equal distances from the nearest part of South Ronaldsay on the east, and the nearest part of the island of Hoy on the west. There is no detached part of this parish locally situated within the boundary of any other parish nor is there any part of any other parish locally situated within the boundary of this one.
It contains about 3706 Statute acres. |

The Beacon is about 70 feet in height of a conical form, with steps for ascending to its summit. One of the inhabited group of the southern isles of Orkney, bounded on the south by the Pentland Firth on the west by Longhope, on the north by Scapa Flow, and on the east by Hoxa Sound. The island is about two miles wide and varying from 1/4 to 3 miles in length. About one half of the island is under cultivation and the remainder is under moss & heather. the whole of the island is low and the soil comparatively good. It is ecclesiastically united with the parish of Walls, but has a neat & comfortable Mission church of its own with a resident Ordained minister. There is also a good public School and Post Office and an excellent harbour called Pan Hope deriving itss name (tradition says) from a salt pan at one time used here for manufacturing salt out of sea water.
There are no antiquities of any kind known on the island. The Earl of Zetland is sole proprietor. |

An uninhabited pastoral island in the Pentland Firth bounded on the west by Cantic Sound on the north by Switha Sound and on the south and east by the Pentland firth. It lies from a south west to a north easterly direction is about 3/4 of a mile in length and about 3/8 of a mile wide. Situated in the parish of Walls & Flotta about one mile north east of Cantic head and about 1 1/4 mile south of the Church of Flotta on the north east side of the island is a large circular cairn of stones which looks very much like the "Green Hills" [underlined] in the "South Walls" [underlined] district. No information can be obtained regarding it. |
