080; 081; 086; 091 This name applies to an island situated towards the north-west of the Orkney Group, its greatest length from north to south is about 7 1/2 miles and its breadth varies from 1/2 to two & a half miles. Three fourths of the area is into moorland, the remainder being pretty well cultivated. It's general appearance is hilly, but the hills are not very high about 700 feet is the greatest altitude on the island. Eday is bounded on the east by the island of Sanday, the Channel or Sound which separates them being called Sound of Eday. The island of Westray and Papa Westray lies to the north-west. the strait of water separating these last named from Eday is called Westray Firth & Sound of Pharay. The islands of Egilshay & Rousay, lie to the south-west of Eday, Shapinshay to the south, and Stronsay to the south-east, the water dividing these last named islands from Eday is called the Stronsay Firth, which has no particular boundary
