088 | From Barrys Orkney Islands 1805 A small portion of pretty high land which the force of the ocean has broken off from the Mainland, and formed into a separate island, to which there is access by land only at low water. From the remains of a wall yet to be seen on the land side, and the marks of some Huts within it, there is much reason to believe that as the name Brough imports, It must have been, like some other through the islands, what may be denominated a rock fortification. In a later period it served a very different purpose, as there are the Remains of a chapel said to have been dedicated to St. Peter which like its fellow in the Burgh of Deerness, was till of late a place of pilgrimage etc. This island is Situated at the north western extremity of the mainland of Orkney, and is the property of the Earl of Zetland.
