I do not think this cluster of houses should be called Birsay which is the name of the district. The bay is called the Bay of Birsay and the brough the Brough of Birsay but the houses are called either Boardhouse or the Barony from the Earls Palace standing in the cluster of houses, in fact the cluster is composed of the Earls Palace the Manse the Established Kirk and a few cottages.
