The parish of Nairn is in the Presbytery of Nairn Synod of Moray. It contains the Municipal and Parliamentary Burgh of Nairn except a
small portion of the former Burgh which belongs to the parish of Auldearn.
The parish of Nairn is bounded on the north by the Moray Firth; on the east, by the parishes of Auldearn and Ardclach; on the south and south west the parishes of Cawdor, and Croy and Dalcross; and on the west by the parish of Ardersier. A detached portion of Cawdor parish is situated between the parishes of Nairn & Auldearn but there are no detached portions of Nairn parish.
In the environs of the town, and along the coast by Delnies, as also about Kildrummie the soil is light and Sandy. On the river side, it consists of sand mixed with a kind of mortar or clay. The south side of the parish is rather of a rich and heavy mould. On the north side of the river the ground is flat and level; and on the south, it rises with a gradual ascent; terminating, at one corner of the parish in the hill of Urchany.
There is no detached portion of this Ph. [Parish] in any other Nor is there a detached portion of any other in this. A detached portion of Cawdor Ph. [Parish] situated between the Phs, [Parishes] of Auldearn and Nairn is drawn with Nairn Ph. [Parish] and is in this Name Book |

This is a Spring Well situated close to the high Water Mark of the Moray Firth, and to the North of the farm Steading of "SeabanK". This is a celebrated Well Know Well, and Know as Tortola Well, the story goes thus how it received the name. "A Gentleman lost his health in the Island Of Tortola, his Case was hopeless, he dreamed of this [Cr??on] and was told, in the dream that the water of a Well here would cure him - he came to Nairn and spent several days among the bushes and discovered a Well & from that moment felt Cure to be certain - change of Climate - habits, Air, food, exercise, drinking pure cold spring water instead of Jamaican Rum & Water, all aided by his own imagination effected a perfect cure - and Doctors said that a Similar course would cure anybody without a Dream - JM |

This hill is densely wooded and is situated in the parishes of Nairn and Auldearn, but principally in the former and borders the parish of Ardclach.. Property of G Mackintosh Esq. Geddes; and Mr. Brodie of Lethen.
Some doubt seems to exist as to what this name applies, that is, whether it comprehends the whole of the wooded range or only the portion north of the point called,The Ord. The authorities quoted herein think that the names or places are independent of each other and consequently this has been adopted. |

This Railway has direct communication by a single line of rails between Bonar Bridge and the City of Perth; and from Inverness to Keith. Its route lies through the heart of the Highlands and presents to tourists and others travelling in search of the picturesque, opportunities for viewing the magnificent scenery through which the line passes, which for cheapness and convenience, are unattainable in any other part of Scotland abounding in Scenery of a similar nature. The "Kebbuck Stone" is a rough standing slab of grey Sandstone; greatest height 6 feet, extreme breadth 4 ft 2 inches; varying in thickness from 14 to 9 inches thickest and in ground, the Stone leans from the upright 9 inches northwards. The west of Inverness-shire face is smooth, having evidently been the bed of the Stone while yet it lay in its quarry; the artificial markings on this face consist of a circular figure 16¼ by 15½ inches, from which branch off a few lines apparently indicative of a rude Iona cross; only if so the lower half of the upright limb is now extremely effaced. The east or Nairn face is rough and dented, having on it a circle 11 inches in diameter with a cross scratched within it; to the Circle's right are various markings (one elliptic with various cuttings within it, another an obtuse angle with a hole at its lower end) having no apparent design, while to the left is a mason like mark: the circle together with the elliptic and angular figures may be ancient; but the mason like mark, the cuttings within the ellipse and the hole at the end of angle are most likely modern and the work of idle boys. There is no appearance of skilled labour about this Stone, all its markings whether ancient or modern having apparently been effected by repeated scratches with an iron point. The Kebbuck Stone stands on a little grassy hillock.
Various are the local traditions regarding the origin of this Stone.
1st That the Danes used it as a mooring post for their invading Galleys; the only fact in favour of this tradition is the close proximity of the old beach line of the Moray Firth; but so far as known to the Examiner this tradition has no support from written records.
2nd That a thief having stolen a cheese (date ancient but unknown) from Inverness Market, he was here overtaken, slain and buried, and this is his monumental Stone; with the effigy of his crime, the Kebbuck - anglice cheese - scratched upon it. Fullartons Gazatteer notices this tradition Vol [Volume] 1 Page 69 it is written "Where this Parish ie. Ardersier is divided from Nairnshire, there is a stone about 6 ft [feet] high and 3 broad called the Cabbac Stone, which tradition says, was erected over a Chieftain who fell in an affray in the town of Inverness" two points militate against this tradition 1st the Stone credits the thief with stealing two Cheeses and 2nd at present the locality ignores the Chieftain rank of the slain man, calling him simply a thief to whose memory it is most unlikely the locality would ever have taken the trouble to raise such a substantial monument.
3rd A local tradition makes this a covenant stone, and George Cuthbert read about 20 years ago in an old Gazetteer of Scotland, while Peter Mackenzie read recently in a small book which he has now managed to lose and is unable to remember its title, a legend somewhat as follows - In ancient times (perhaps the books supply the date) a burn ran in the slack to the west of the Kebback Stone, this steam formed the boundary between the Lairds of Delnies and Ardersier, but rainy seasons at times changed its course, which gave rise to bickerings as to the exact boundary, ending often in feud & bloodshed. On one day the antagonistic Lairds had mustered their tenants for battle when a 3rd Laird from the West Highlands named Cameron attended by a large following appeared on the scene; demanded to be made Mediator & settled the dispute, whereon ensued peace, sealed by a feast of bread, cheese & whisky, and crowned at its close by the heretofore antagonistic tenantry raising this stone as a token of perpetual peace between their feudal lords. The Circles on the stone commemorate the respective sizes of the Kebbucks furnished by each Laird to the feast, and testify to the liberality of Ardersier in so far as cheese was concerned. |

On the summit of a natural eminence on the west-side and near the base of the "Hill of Urchany" a few stones are strewn about which tradition says belonged to an Ancient Castle called "Castle Finlay". In reply to his note in reference to this object, W. Mackintosh, Geddes, says:- "With regard to the vitrified Fort designated Castle Finlay or Fionlach, there is no tradition that I am aware of it, And the surmise is, that it was the site of a beacon fire in more or less ancient times".
W. Stables, Cawdor, is the of the same opinion as Mr Mackintosh as to its being a vitrified Fort. |

This name applied to an ancient Chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, situated in the centre of a burial ground a short distance east of Geddes House. It consists of the walls only which are about 8 feet high. "At the place of Easter Geddes, are the remains of an old chapel, with a burying ground around it. In this chapel is the burying place of the family of Kilravock & here they have been interred for many generations back. Lady Kilravock & her husband Hugh Rose of Geddes, obtained a charter from King John Baliol in the year 1293, Conferring to them & to their heirs the lands of Geddes & Kilravock. The Charter of foundation of the Chapel of Easter Geddes, part of the walls of which is still extant & granted by Hugh Rose of Kilravock bears date 1473. This Chapel was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, & endowed with 5 £ seats of stipend, together with a small croft as a glebe & on which to erect a manse. The bull of priveleges for said Chapel is dated at Rome 26th April 1475, in the 4th year of Pope Sextus the fourth". |
