007 | The parish of Spynie is in the Presbytery of Elgin, Synod of Moray. It is bounded on the east by the parishes of Drainie, and St Andrews Lhanbryd, on the south by the parish of Elgin on the west by the parish of Alves, and on the north and north west by the paris of Duffus. A portion of the parish of Spynie called Borough Briggs on the south of the River Lossie is in the Municipal and Parliamentary Burgh of Elgin. This portion is bounded on the north by the River Lossie; on the south by Blackfriars Road; on the east by North Street; on the west by the grounds of Blackfriars Haugh. There are no detached portions of the parish of Spynie nor are there any detached portions of another parish situated within it. The following statement is given by the Revd [Reverend] Dr Kidd In consequence of the parish church being removed from Spynie Church Yard to Quarry Wood where it is now situated, the then Minister and Elders held a Session in 1735, the time the church was removed, and headed their minutes and meetings "New Spynie" merely from the translation of the church to is new position, but "Spynie" is the correct name of the parish and it is now so designated in Session, Prebytory, and other records of the parish. New Spynie being retained by the people merely as a local designation to distinguish the new church from the old one. |
