SAW MILL |
|
|
018.14 |
One of which supplies the motive power both to a Saw Meal, and fulling Mill. On the side of this rivulet stands the Parish Church; And the village is also adorned with a handsome Free Church. Both the Manses stand on the rising ground on the lefthand Side, overlooking the Village Near the Free Church Manse is the Chapel Hill, where one or two stones point out the site of An ancient chapel A little to the west of this point rises the Cour rock, a considerable hill covered with fir trees. It is principally Composed of quartz. In the crevices or drusy cavities of loose masseS scattered over the hill may be Seen numerous Small crystals. On climbing to the highest point, the labourer will be fully recompensed by the Splendour of the view Below lies the village, calmy reposing Amid its Cultivated fields, stretching to the side of the river, that steals along the opposite Side of the valley at the foot of the well wooded Ben Aigen.- now lost behind a clump of trees now "Shining in the silver beamS" Looking northward, we have a striking view of the Pass of Sourden, and smile at the supposed difficulty of the Spey finding her way through the glen. beyond we can See, like a Snow White thread, the Suspension bridge Connecting the Counties of Moray and Banff close by the railway viaduct, and the diminishing hills closing the distant view To the west of the ConerocK Stretches a wild uncultivated moor, that gives rise to the Streams that cross the Streets of the village. One of these Streams, has cut its Channel So deep as to give the rugged ravine a gloomy aspect. which bears the name of Doony, and in its day has had the honour of being the haunt of fairies. The houses in the village are nearly 300, and the population Upwards of 1000. it is now enlivened by the railway train sweeping
along and bringing many to enjoy its Scenery to whom it was formerly unknown. Were suitable accommodation once provided, there are few places where one could so pleasantly spend the months of summer; And we are greatly mistaken if it does not become a favourite resort of Such as would enjoy the Mild Climate of Morayshire, together with the invigorating breeze of the Mountains, without penetrating beyond the border of the Highlands.

Village of Rothes continued
During the memorable flood of 1829, the plain of Rothes must have realised, to a considerable extent our idea of its having once been an arm of the Sea; it suffered greatly. but has long since assumed its accustomed look of fertility Among the incidents connected more immediately with this locality, we may mention that of a poor widow named Riach, who tenanted a farmhouse immediately below that of Dandalieth and although many hundred yards from the river, yet in a short space the water rose five feet on the walls and the stream that swept along between the road and the farmsteading was at
least four times as great as the Spey in its ordinary state. Having procured a boat from Rothes two lads of the name of Riach volunteered to man her. the boat put off and having pulled round to the front of the buildings, they were hid from the anxious gaze of the spectators. While they were expecting its reappearance. the upper gable of the house gave way and carried half the building along with it. "Oh my brother is gone !" Cried a voice of a agony. Alluding to one of the lads that manned the boat, but to the unspeakable joy of all, the little boat was discovered through the gap in the building, with the remainder of the family seated in it. There were sincere thanks offered to God for this signal interposition of his providence for there were rescued from that perilous position eight adults and two children after having remained in that awful situation for nine hours during the night." |

A neat mausoleum erected by By Richard Wharton Duff Esqr of Orton it occupies the site of St Mary's Chapel of which there is no vestige now remaining in Clearing out the foundation of the said chapel a small fragment of fret ornament was found which had all the characteristics of the Anglo Norman style, which would point to the chapel being built about this period from 1066 to 1135 The Mausoleum bears a latin inscription of which the rendering is as follows:- "In the honor of the Virgin Mary of which only the remains
have come down to our times. Richard Wharton Duff Esqr of Orton mindful of death has caused this mausoleum to be erected in the year of human redemption 1844, that under its roof his own remains and that of his family may rest in peace" * |

_ "Advancing still farther, we reach on the right, another large farm, called
Orbliston but as we advance, The attention is attracted, on the opposite Side, by a
Mausoleum, which occupies the site of a chapel well. which formerly enjoyed
a high reputation for curing various diseases, and whose reputed virtues as
in most other places, were most powerfull on the first Sabbath of May. There were
also vessels at the well, hollowed out of stone for holding the water, some for
head and others for the feet. and in order to give full effect to the water
It was necessary that these vessels should be thrice turned "wither shins or with
or with the Sun, as in many other sites of superstition. -
An interesting architectural fragment was discovered here, which has thus
been described by the late Mr T. McKenzie, architect "I may mention that in
clearing out the foundations of St Mary's Chapel at Orton, the property of
A. T. H Duff Esq. we discovered among other interesting objects, a small fragment
of a fret ornament, which has all the characteristics of the Anglo Norman
style, and which proves the chapel to have been built about this period
(from 1066 to 1135) The Mausoleum was built by Richard Wharton Duff Esqr of
Orton and bears the following inscription

Rev. [Reverend] James Gray, Minister of Rothes |
018.09 |
Applied to a Stone circle Situated about half a Mile South of Pitcraggie, and immediately west of BurntKirk. There are none of the upright stones now remaining, but the base of the circle is quite entire. This place is thought by some to have been a place of Worship at an early period; and from its proximity to the BurntKirk it in someway strengthens this belief. A very old woman who lived near this place, informed Mr James Smith tenant of Pitcraiggie, that the she remembered of seeing a number of very large upright stones Standing, but were from time to time, removed by people in the neighbourhood, for the purpose of having then converted into Mill-stones, Door posts and Rollers etc. The interior of this Circle was composed of loose stones, and he thinKs as many as 600 loads of Stones were removed for the purpose of building dyKes and filling drains. The stones were all burnt and mixed with bones; and were all loose so that it only required the lowest ones moved to maKe those above tumble down From this hill the views are very extensive, To the South east, the prospect is bounded by the Mountains of Aberdeenshire While nearer may be seen Beneagan, the Laich o' Moray and a great extent of the north east Coast. |

The old church and churchyard of Dundurcas, the former in ruins, are to be seen not far from the Spey, about two miles from the Village of Rothes and occupy an interesting and attractive situation on the verge of a piece of tableland overlooKing the fertile Haugh of Dundurcas only the walls of the church remain, and the burial-ground is enclosed with a substantial wall, which was built a few years ago at the expense of the late Dr [Doctor] John Simpson, See New Statistical Account P [Pages] 5 & 6 A mile beyond Garbity we reach Dundurcas a small village that has been transferred from the left to the side of the road; near the old site, however, is the roofless church of the parish of this name, which has long been united to that of Rothes. It is reported the parties who had been engaged to take down the superseded church, were assailed by the parishioners with stones |

018.11 |
The road now approaches the ruin and there was little more than room for its bed between the road and the opposite bank which is formed by the high projecting land of Aikenway which gives name to an ancient Castle, the ruins of of which may yet be traced on the top of the Rock. Though the River was here so greatly Contracted - the distance from the promontory to the opposite hill being only 237 feet- yet the Railway has thrust itself between it and the Road. Here during the flood of 1829, the River rose 20 feet 10 inches above its ordinary height, and 15 inches above the mark made to record the much-talked-of flood of 1768. its
general Course has hitherto been from West to east; but this promontory makes it henceforth pursue a Northerly direction, till it falls into the Sea, In the rocks on the right hand side of the Road will be found narrow veins of Barytes, or heavy Spar.

018.14 |
In the immediate vicinity of the Village the Remains of the once important and well
fortified Castle of Rothes is to be seen. This place of defence, the ancient seat of the Earls of Rothes stood on the extreme Verge of a point of land and the situation must have afforded every facility to the occupants for expelling the assults of invading enemies. And not only did it posses this natural advantage but moreover was surrounded by a high wall, and defended by a ditch on the land side, over which a draw-bridge waS thrown, whereby the Castle was nearly isulated, and well secured. The space occupied by this fortalice was pretty large as the inequalities of the surface covering the ruins indicate. At the present day, no vestige of the Castle itself remainS. Only a portion of the high wall which once encompassed it stands a conspicuous object, and seems to call to remembrance the war-liKe character of our ancestors. About half a Century ago, Many of the stones of the ruin were removed to assist the building of some of the houses of the village. The exact date when the castle was-erected is uncertain but it may be safely supposed that it was not earlier than the middle of the fifteenth Century. About that period, the first Earl of Rothes was created of the Ancient, and honourable house of Leslie and the castle was the residence of the Earls to whom it has given the title.
