018.04 Village of Rothes continued
During the memorable flood of 1829, the plain of Rothes must have realised, to a considerable extent our idea of its having once been an arm of the Sea; it suffered greatly. but has long since assumed its accustomed look of fertility Among the incidents connected more immediately with this locality, we may mention that of a poor widow named Riach, who tenanted a farmhouse immediately below that of Dandalieth and although many hundred yards from the river, yet in a short space the water rose five feet on the walls and the stream that swept along between the road and the farmsteading was at
least four times as great as the Spey in its ordinary state. Having procured a boat from Rothes two lads of the name of Riach volunteered to man her. the boat put off and having pulled round to the front of the buildings, they were hid from the anxious gaze of the spectators. While they were expecting its reappearance. the upper gable of the house gave way and carried half the building along with it. "Oh my brother is gone !" Cried a voice of a agony. Alluding to one of the lads that manned the boat, but to the unspeakable joy of all, the little boat was discovered through the gap in the building, with the remainder of the family seated in it. There were sincere thanks offered to God for this signal interposition of his providence for there were rescued from that perilous position eight adults and two children after having remained in that awful situation for nine hours during the night."
