018.16 A neat mausoleum erected by By Richard Wharton Duff Esqr of Orton it occupies the site of St Mary's Chapel of which there is no vestige now remaining in Clearing out the foundation of the said chapel a small fragment of fret ornament was found which had all the characteristics of the Anglo Norman style, which would point to the chapel being built about this period from 1066 to 1135 The Mausoleum bears a latin inscription of which the rendering is as follows:- "In the honor of the Virgin Mary of which only the remains
have come down to our times. Richard Wharton Duff Esqr of Orton mindful of death has caused this mausoleum to be erected in the year of human redemption 1844, that under its roof his own remains and that of his family may rest in peace" *
