007.16 This institution was erected at a cost of £12,000 & opened in June 1833 and bears the title of its, donor Major-General Anderson who bequeathed the sum of £70,000 for its erection & Endowment - The interior contains ample accommodation for fifty children and ten aged persons - the former are admitted to the charity at the age of eight & remain till fourteen.
FREE SCHOOL (Public) [Elgin] 007.16 A public free school, on the Lancasterian system, is attached to the institution, having a separate entrance, for the education of male & female children whose parents, though in humble circumstances, are able to maintain and clothe them. The average daily attendance is about 300. There is a schoolroom & a small Chapel in the interior of the institution for the inmates. Property of the Trustees.

007.16 The original Bede House was built in 1624 to contain four poor persons with a piece of Ground attached to each. This building having become ruinous, the magistrates erected the present one on its site in 1846. It is a narrow building with small double windows to the street. Over the entrance is the inscription Hospitalium Burgi de Elgin per idem conditum" with the date 1624 - Each biedman besides the accommodation of house and garden receives £10.10. per annum.
