007.16 The Ancient royal Castle of Elgin, the remains of which still exist on Lady Hill, consisting of part of the Keep or square tower and several detached portions of the walls. It is believed to have been erected by David I and occupied as a royal Castle for several centuries. It is called a royal fort by Shaw in his History of the Province of Moray but "Castle" is its proper designation & it is so termed in a Charter as far back as 1160. The Earls of Moray were its hereditary constables & the hill on which it stood still belongs to their representative.
