Note.
The Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Garioch on being referred
to in reference to the spelling of this name
states that on inquiry at the old people in
the village he finds that the correct spelling is
Hitchanhangye from "Hitch an' hang ye"
i.e. a hitch of a rope round the neck to hang someone, and the
name has therefore been altered accordingly.
