OS1/11/99/96 MELVILLE'S MONUMENT Melvilles Monument Mr, Bowie Queen St, David Peters Thistle Street This pillar was erected to the memory of Lord Melville, it is a model of one raised to the Emperor Trajan in Rome, It was commenced on the 20th. of April 1821 and was completed in 1828 at an expense of about £6000 which was contributed by individuals chiefly connected with the navy, over which Lord Melville had long presided, The height of the column including the pedestal is about 136 ft, [feet] its diameter diminishing from 12 feet 2 inches at the base to 10 feet 6 inches at its Apex, The Statue which Crowns its Summit is 14 feet in height, and was executed by Mr. Robert Forrest of Lanark, In the centre of the pillar there is a Spiral Stair of 192 Steps which leads to the top of the column, and from which a fine view can be obtained of the city,

OS1/11/99/117 REGISTER OFFICE Register Office W. Marshall Jewler North Bridge Street Map of City A large and handsome building after a plan by the celebrated Architect Robert Adam. It forms a square of 200 feet on each side, and contains about a hundered [sic] apartments. In the interior of the square is a circular building surmounted with a dome about 50 feet in diameter and 80 in height & containing a marble statue of George 111, and at each angle is a small square turret, those in front showing the time and direction of the wind. In the centre of the front there is a projection of three windows in breadth and 4 corinthian pilasters supporting a pediment within which are the Arms of great Britain, and at each extremity there is another projection with a venetian window, and on the top a stone balustrade. In the interior are deposited all state papers, copies of title deeds of property, contracts Mortgages, documents made use of in actions before the court of sessions etc. It also contains a beautiful copy of the treaty of Union written on Vellum but none of the state papers are of a remote period, as the public archives od Scotland were destroyed by Edward 1 of England and also by Cromwell. A stone Screen runs in front of this building and on a platform in the centre, is to be erected an equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington.

OS1/11/99/121 EQUESTRIAN STATUE OF THE EARL OF HOPETOUN Hopetoun Statue John Elder, George Street Mr Murray, St. Andrew's Square 002 An equestrian Statue of John Fourth earl of Hopetoun whose name figures so conspicuously in the annals of the late war. It is situatedin the centre of a small plot of ground in front of the Royal Bank, And was erected by voluntary subscription from Gentlemen chiefly in connection with the Army and Navy. The figure is of bronze and is of colossal dimensions and stands on a pedestal of about 12 or 14 feet high on the W. [West] side of pedestal is inscribed the following, "John Fourth Earl of Hopetoun Erected by the gratitude of his Countrymen Who loved and Reverenced in his person the assembled vertues of distant periods of history The unshaken Patriotism of the ancient Roman The spirit of honour, and gentliness [gentleness] and Courtsay [Courtesy] Proper to the age of Chivalry Together with skill in the art of war worthy of the companion of Abercrombie, Moore, and Wellington.

OS1/11/99/124 NEW CLUB HOUSE New Club House Annual Report (1849) 002 A large and most elegant building situated in Princes Street nearly opposit [opposite] to the Royal Institution. Its interior is most spaciously fitted out with Dining rooms sitting rooms reading rooms and Library etc etc, affording every accommodations to its members The number of members averages about 700 who consists principally of the aristocrats and a goodly number in connection with the army and navy. The entry money that each member has to pay, on admission is 35 Guineas, and the annual Subscription 5 Guineas payable in advance, at the Union Bank of Scotland. It is managed by a Committee of its members chosen annually.

OS1/11/99/125 SIR WALTER SCOTT'S MONUMENT Scott Monument Scott Monument Map of City McDowall's Guide Book 002 A most elegant Gothic structure erected to the memory of Sir Walter Scott. It was founded on the 15th of August 1840, and inaugurated on the 15th of August 1846, and cost to the present time £16000. It is an open Gothic cross or tower, many of its details being taken from Melrose Abbey. It is founded upon a rock 52 feet below the surface, and rises above the level of the Street to the height of 200 feet, A Statue of Sir Walter Scott, sculptured from a large block of Carara marble, by Mr John Steele, rests on a platform, approached by a flight of steps, and represents him in a sitting posture, attired in a plaid with a book in his hand; and his favourite dog maida at his feet. From the corners of the platform arises a series of clustered Columns, which support 4 arches, forming a vaulted roof, crossed with groinings, and having a pendant in the centre, Four projecting buttresses are also connected with the vaulted roof by arches, and these spring up as lateral towers to the height of 90 feet. These serve as imposts to 4 flying buttresses, which terminate in pedestals on which are placed a Friar, a nun, a jester, and a Knight Templar. The Capitals Separating the clustered columns, represent 16 Scottish poets (viz [namely] James Hog, Burns, Ferguson, Ramsay etc etc The pediment above the arches contains richly carved niches, and is surmounted by [a] screen which runs around the first gallery, on a level with this gallery is a square apartment, intended for a museum, having spacious arched windows partially concealed by the canopies and crosses of 4 niches, which contain a statue of Prince Charles Stewart on the North, Meg Merrilees on the East, the Lady of the Lake on the South, and the last minstrel on the West. Above this are other three galleries, the highest of which is reached by a flight of 287 steps and is surrounded by a projecting screen, supported by 8 figures of Druidical priests on their bended Knees, with scrolls in their hands, and on the sides of the tower above are statues Meg Dods, Mause Headrig, Dominie Sampson and Dandie Dinmont.

OS1/11/99/128 ROYAL INSTITUTION Royal Institution McDowall's Guide Book Mr Harrison 002 A large and most elegant building erected after a design by W.H. Playfair, and is reckoned the finest specimen of Grecian architecture in the City. The Northern front is adorned with a portico of Doric columns resting on an elevated basement, behind the pediment of which is a colossal Statue of Queen Victoria, in a sitting posture, one hand resting on a globe and the other holding a Sceptre. The Southern front has also a portico, and the other sides have rows of Doric Columns with small flanking porticos. It was founded in 1823 and altogether cost about £40000. The interior contains apartments for the Royal Society the Royal Institution for the encouragement of the fine arts, and the Board of Trustees for manufactures and Fisheries at whose joint expense it was erected. The rooms contains ancient and modern paintings, Antique cats and vases and casts of all the celebrated pieces of sculpture etc
