[Situation] At the East end of Princes Street In ShaKespeare Square.
A large plain rectangular [---] building with a large portico in front over it is the Royal [---] in Niches are two Sculptuted figures representing the tragic Comic Masse, "In 1767 a Royal patent was obtained and in 1769 the present theatre was built by Subscription. In 1809 H. Siddons became manager with a new patent and on the terms that by a pament of £2000 yearly rent for 21 years the Theatre was the the expiry of this period to become his property. In 1830 the patent was again renewed in favour of Mrs Siddons, and her borther Mr. Murray, the present manager." Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Edinburgh.
