[Situation] South Side of Princes Street and North side of the Mound A large and handsome structure of the Grecian style of architure after a design by Mr. Playfair. The northern front adjoining Princes Street is adorned with a handsome portico of Doric Columns resting an elevated basement behind the pediment of which is a Colossal Statue of Queen Victoria in a sitting posture. The southern front has also a portico and the other sides have rows of Doric Columns with small flanKing porticos. It was founded in 1823 & cost altogether £40,000. The interior contains apartments for the Royal society, The Royal Institution for the encouragement of the fine arts, and the Board of Trustees for Manufactures and fishing at whose joint expense it was erected There is a good collection of anct. [ancient] pictures paintings &c. also a grand gallery for the collection of casts &c. |
