A well laid out Street or Terrace of about one mile in length leaving the North end of the Lothian Road at St. John's Chapel and leading in an Easterly direction to Waterloo Place, it is well drained, paved and lighted up with gas, having on its North side a flagged causeway of about 12 or 14 feet in width, The houses are 3 and 4 stories high exclusive of underground flats, principlly of the modern style of architecture, and are mostly appropriated as shops of every variety, a few of the most respectable hotes, and some public buildings. This street is the best promenade in the city, being open on the south side, it has in view, nearly the whole length of the Old town, which the Babel height of some of its building including the castle, are the most elegant scenes that Princes Street can boast of, Opposite and nearly the whole length of this street are a range of well laid out pleasure grounds, appropriated for the use of its inhabitants, |
