002 [Situation] About 36 chains E by S [east by South] of St. Stephens Church & in the locality of Old Broughton N [North] Side of Barony St [Street].
A Small neat edifi [edifice] ornamented by two Small [--] erected 1843-4 partly [by ?] the Congregation and par [partly ?] by the church building [--] It is well fitted with sit [sittings ?] Capable of accommodating 800 persons. The minister the Revd [Reverend] Dr [Doctor] Gray whose Stipends amount to abou [about] £130 paid from the Susten [Sustenance ?] fund and about £100 con [?] by the Congregation. Underneath the church is a lower [--] or room which is occupied [as] a school room in connection with the church. This church is indiscriminately named & written Free St. Mary's church and St. Mary's Free Church This is also the case with respect to all the other Free Churches of the City which takes the name of Saints. But the mode of expression "St. Mary's Free Church" seems to be the most correct and is therefore adopted on the Ordnance Plans
