An extensive note relating to the spelling of "Foxe's Lane" -
"Although all the authorities are for the spelling Foxe's Lane yet I would suggest the propriety of disagreeing with this authority as I believe it is from Fox a family name. Therefore "Fox's Lane" would be the proper orthography & would be better to engrave on plan."
Relating to Riddle's Close - There is a note indicating that the apostrophe is "not on plan". |

There is no doubt whatever that part of the churchyard occupied the ground through which St. Anthony's Street now passes as large quantities of human bones were exhumed were exhumed when the street was opened for the purpose of laying gas pipes. A large and tastefully built edifice of the Gothic Style of architecture. The east and west ends of which were rebuilt in 1847. The interior is most handsomely fitted up with galleries etc and contains sittings for 1200 persons. The North and South Sides of this edifice and the pillars in the interior are the only remains of the old building which was called St. Marys prior to the year 1609 when it was declared by the authority of parliament to be the parish church of South Leith, in place of that of Restalrig. "The precise date of the erection of the present church of south Leith cannot be ascertained, but is probable that it was built about the year 1490. In a Charter of James lll [3rd] dated 1490, his majesty confirms a charter which one Peter Falconer had granted to a Chaplain and his successors, for celebrating divine worship at the altar of St Peter in the church at Leith, which is therein called a "New Church" dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The central part and middle aisles of the present church, with the steeple, appear to have constituted the original erection, while the side buildings seem to have been afterwards added. The choir at the east end was demolished at the Reformation". see Statistical [Account] of the Co. [County] page 777. |

The Site of an ancient building which was demolished in 1824 for the purpose of enlarging the burying ground This institution was founded by the Church Session of South Leith in 1614 and confirmed by a Charter of James Vl [6th]. The spot on which it stood is now marked by the Scottish Arms built into the wall of the Church yard The only part remaining of this building is that portion of the wall which bounds S.E. [South East] corner of the Church y [yard]. "This old building stood on the east side of the Kirkgate and at the south-west corner of the churchyard It was founded by the church session of South Leith in the year 1614 and endowed with certain lands and teneme [tenements] anciently belonging to the preceptor of St. Anthony in Leith and the Chapel of St. James at Newhaven. The arising from these subjects together with contributions made by the maltmen, trades and traffickers in Leith were approp [appropriated] to the support of aged women belonging to their Crafts. The number of paupers seldom exceeded twelve, each of them had an [apartment ?] ment in the hospital with fire candle and a weekly pension. This establishment having been confirmed by the ch [charter] of James Vl [6th] received from that circumstance the name which it bore. The spot on which King James's Hospital stood is now marked by the Scottish arms built into the wall of South Leith Church-yard in the Kirkgate" Campbells History of Leith Page 345 |

This name applies to the site of an old building which was occupied as an academy which was of considerable note as a place of learning. This building was destroyed in 1824, to enlarge the burying ground. "the old Grammar school and the Kintore, these ancient buildings were both situated in the immediate vicinity of South Leith Church and on the line of the Kirkgate. The former [i.e. Old Grammar School] stood at the South west corner of the churchyard, and the latter [Kintore] being perforated by an arched passage, formed the entrance which led to the Church from the street just named [Kirkgate]. At what period the Old Grammar School was erected we have not ascertained. It appears to have been a building of considerable antiquity, as we find by the records of South Leith Church, that the high school of Leith was a flourishing establishment as early as the middle of the 17th century." see page 317 History of Leith. |

[Situation] W. [West] of Kirkgate.
The site of an ancient monastery and burying ground, which is said to have been founded by Robert Logan of Restalrig, and confirmed by Bishop Wardlaw of St. Andrews. Dr [Doctor] Robertson author of the Antiquities of Leith & Mr Reid, Publisher, says the buildings of the Monastery or Preceptory extended from the east end of Giles St [Street] to the east end of St. Anthony St. [Street], thence along the North side of the latter to St. Anthony Lane, not a vestige of the buildings now remains. About 7 or 8 years ago whilst opening St Anthony St [Street] for the purpose of laying water pipes, a large quantity of human bones were discovered, they were much decayed and crumbled by the slightest pressure. At the South-west Corner of St Anthony's Wynd and near the Kirkgate stood the preceptor of St Anthony, the only one in Scotland. This edifice was founded in 1435 by Robert Logan of Restalrig nd [and] Confirmed by Wardlaw, Bishop of St Andrews. That it was a structure of no ordinary description appears from Camerarius, who in the list of monasteries given in his Catalogue of Scottish Saints thus mentions that of Saint Anthony at Leith "Leithanum ordinis Sancti Anthonii fundatum magnificentissi sum fuit sed ita hereticorum furor debacchatus ut ne vestigial hodie supersunt". Both Maitland and not [Arnot ?] call the Canons of this establishment Knights Templars but there is good reason to believe that they were only religious Knights etc, Campbells History of Leith Page 333 |
