This name applies to the [--] flat of an ancient house wh [which] is occupied as the R. [Roman] Catholic [School ?] average number of scholars [--] to about 100. The teacher name Mr Farrol whose salary is der [derived] from school fees, and an emolu [emolument] from Bishop Gillies. This house is 3 storeys high and in good repair, and w [was] the residence of Lord Balmerino who along with [the] Earl of Kilmarnock, was beheaded on the 11th of Aug [August] 1746. "In 1650 Lord Balmerino's mansion had the honor [honour] of being the residence of Charles II [Second], during part of his sojourn in Scotland." Tales & Traditions of Leith 1851. "One of the most remarkable old houses in Leith, of whose history we know any thing is that which was formerly the residence of the unfortunate Lord Balmerino, who along with the Earl of Kilmarnock, was beheaded on the Tower Hill on the 11th of Augt [August] 1746" "Balmerino house is situated between Charlotte Street and Coatfield Lane its south gable partly forming the opening of the lat [latter] from the Kirkgate" See Campbell's Hist [History] of Leith Page 310-1. Ext [Extract] from Dr [Doctor] Robertsons Antiquities of Leith "The house was built by John Stewart, Earl of Carrick second son of Robert Earl of Orkney natural son of James V [Fifth] in 1631; the Earl of Carrick sold the house & grounds on the 13th Sept [September] 1643 to John, Lord Balmerino. The property was the residence of the Balmerino family from 1643 until the attainder of the last Lord after which in 1755 the estates were sold to the Earl of Moray" After this it passed thro' [through] various hands & in 1848 was sold to the Roman Catholic body who have converted it into Schools
