[Situation] at the South corner of Bernard Street All historians of Leith, as well as some of its present inhabitants have little doubt this building had been once a royal residence, although when it was first erected or at what period it was deserted by royalty cannot be ascertained, It appears from various descriptions, and charts that the buildings occupied a large extent of ground between the Broad Wynd and Bernard Street but the principal part of them seems to have occupied the South Corner of Bernard street, and. Shore, consisting of a square tower with a short spire rising from its centre The King's wark. in the sixteenth Century was considered a great ornament to the town of Leith and was resorted to by strangers. who visited the port as on object worthy of seeing, in 1477 King James III, granted out this house a perpetual annuity of twelve Merks, for the support of a chaplain to officiate at the alter of the upper chapel in the Collegiate.
