[Situation] About 9 chs [chains] N.W. [North West] from North Leith Church.
A modern substantially built barracks situated in the western suburb of Leith and fronting the Firth Of Forth. It contains extensive gun Sheds, Powder Magazine and other ordnance stores. The fortifications consist of a battery of eight guns, several mortars commanding the Firth of Forth, and designed for the protection of the Shipping of Leith. It is a Station for Artillery, and is Capable of containing 230 men with Stables for 150 horses.

Leith Fort Object: Barracks

"Cromwell repaired Leith Fort which had been
previously demolished and erected a Citadel with five
Bastions. This Citadel was again demolished at the
restoration, and the site bestowed on the Duke of
Lauderdale from whom the City of Edinburgh repurchased
it for £6000. The present fort now forms a station for
artillery and is Capable of Containing 350 men with Stables for
150 horses."
