[Civil Engineer] Kirkwoods Map [Situation] Projecting into the Firth of Forth North of the Burgh of Leith A substantially constructed Pier extending northerly from Shore Street to Dolphin Head, on the east side of the Water of Leith, from Shore Street to the Inner Lighthouse it is formed of stone, with a strong breakwater on its eastern side, from thence to its extremity at Dolphin Head it is a strong wooden platform protected beneath by a strong stone breakwater.

A Small breakwater extending from the Martello tower to the East Pier. it is formed of ruble stones loosely thrown together it was made for the prevention of the tidal water acting on the East Pier. it is covered after a short time of flood tide.

OS1/11/72/8 MARTELLO TOWER Martello Tower Martello Tower Mr. Dall R.N. Supt [Royal Navy Superintendent] of Docks City Map [Situation] About 19 chains E. [East] of East Pier A circular tower situated at the extremity of the East Pier. It forms part of the fortification designed for the protection of the town & shipping of Leith and is capable of containing a number of soldiers. The platform on the top had carriages & fixtures requisite of three swivel guns. It was built from plans furnished by Col. [Colonel] Jones RE. [Royal Engineers]
