It contains within its area the statue of one the Earls of Morton & his lady reclining on a pedestal, it has long been unroofed but is worthy of careful preservation as a venerable relic of the olden time. "

A small town on the banks of the North & South Esk, a little above their junction it consists of two long streets named the High Street and Back Street running parallel & communicating by thickly populated closes, the houses in the front Street are of a decent description & are chiefly used as shops and Offices there is a weekly Market on Thursdays but the principal article of sale is grain it being considered the greatest corn Market in Scotland, there are several Banks Churches & Schools in the town, also Gas Works Foundry, Tanneries &c and an almost hourly communication is kept up with Edinb. [Edinburgh] by railway omnibus, it contains about 5000 inhabitants not including the suburbs & is now a Burgh of Regality & its affairs managed by a Bailie & Eleven Trustees, the town is of no great antiquity being first mentioned in connection with Dalkeith Castle in the 14th Century, a detachment of puritan roundheads lay here under Gen [General] Monk in 1654 The Gen [General] had his head Quarters at the Castle.

A small parish in the County of Edinburgh being only about 2 miles Square lying on the banks of the North and South Esk Rivers; bounded on the north by Newton and InveresK Parishes; on the east by InveresK and Cranston; on the south and west by Newbattle and Lasswade; and on the west by Lasswade and Newton. Its greatest length is 3 1/2 miles; greatest breadth 2 1/4 miles. The Surface is greatly undulated, but in no quarter rises into hills; indeed the whole might be considered a plain, did not the steep banks of the river give it an uneven and broKen appearance. It contains the populous and thriving town of DalKeith (for which See description). Adjoining the town is DalKeith House, the princely residence of the Duke of Buccleuch, situated in a splendid parK of about 800 acres, embosomed amongst fine old wood. The Rivers North & South Esk unite in this park and after flowing for about 2 1/2 miles through a rich pastoral district falls into the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh. This parish is in the Synod of Lothian & Tweeddale and is the seat of a presbytery. Patron, the Duke of Buccleuch.

OS1/11/70/103 DALKEITH HOUSE Dalkeith House Dalkeith Palace Mr Moncrieff Factor to the DuKe of Buccleuch Rev [Reverend] Mr Wright DalKeith Manse A spacious & magnificient mansion erected upon the site of the ancient castle of DalKeith by one of the Duchess of Buccleuch & Monmouth about the beginning of the 18th Century with the exceptions of 4 Corinthian pilasters at the front it is void of any architectural embellishments Yet situated as it is upon a peninsula between the two Esk Rivers where the natural beauty of the scenery has rendered it easy for the artificial means which have been employed to convert it into one of the most splendid residences & demesnes in the Kingdom. The whole is Surrounded by a park wall several miles in circumference and numerous droves of deer have access throughout the place for pasturage it is the property of the present DuKe of Buccleuch. OS1/11/70/104 DALKEITH [town] Dalkeith Bailie Moncrieff Dalkeith Rev [Reverend] Mr Wright A small town upon the banKs of the North and South Esks, a little above their junction with each other it consists of two long streets the Back & High St running parallel with each other for a good way & communicating by thicKly populated entries or Closes. The houses in the front st are of a very decent description & are chiefly used as shops and offices. There is a weekly market on Thursdays, but the principal article of sale is grain, it being considered the greatest corn market in the neighbourhood there are several banKs, schools & churches in the Town as also a Gas work, Tan Yards and a foundry. The post office is in a private house near the centre of the town and there are two deliveries dayly an almost hourly intercourse is kept up with Edinbr [Edinburgh] by rail and omnibus. There are about 5000 inhabitants not including the suburbs of "Bridge End" or [---] it is now a burgh of Regality, its affairs being managed by a Bailie & eleven trustees. The town is of no great antiquity being first mentioned in connection with DalKeith Castle in the 14th Century a detachment of puritan roundheads lay under MonK in 1654 The general making the castle his headquarters during his stay.

Chamberlain's Office Mr Alexander Paterson - Sub Inspector No memorial remains of the Grahams, unless the fading traditions of the place, and two curious but wasted tombstones which lie within the ruined circuit of the old Church They represent Knight in chain armour, lying cross-legged upon their monuments, like those ancient and curious figures on the tombs in the Temple Church, London - A note in the Statistical Acct. [Account] of the Parish of DalKeith by Peter Steele, AM [Artium Magister] - Copied from Provincial Antiquities of Scotland, by Sir W. Scott, Mr Peter Steele AM [Artium Magister] Author of a like Statistical Acct. [Account] of DalKeith differs from Sir Walter Scott's provincial Antiquities of Scotland. He says - Probably the distinguished writer of this statement (meaning Sir W. Scott's worK) had not seen "these Knights on their monuments" The figures on the tombstone are a Knight and his lady; at the extremity of their heads are their coats of arms: the Knight has two Stars or mullets on a chief * Note (Sir James Douglas of DalKeith bore two stars or mullets on a chief in 1371) and the lady has the lion rampant of Scotland, and two stars of mullets clearly showing that it is the monument of one of the Douglasses, who married one of the daughters of the royal family of Scotland. The arms of the Grahams are three escallops &c.

OS1/11/70/108 CHOIR Remains of St Nicholas's Kirk [Dalkeith] Choir Steele's Stat acct [Statistical account] of the Parish of DalKeith Under the head of Antiquities - it is mentioned in the Stat Acct [Statistical Account] - that the principal object in the parish entitled to notice under the head of antiquities is the ancient choir attached to the parish Church. It is 44 feet long by 27 feet wide and is built in a more ornamental style than the body of the church. It contains within its area the Statues of one of the Earls of Morton and his lady, reclining on a pedestal. It has long been unroofed, but it is worthy of careful preservation as a venerable relic of the olden time.

Watson, Dalkeith An elegant church of the early English Gothic style was built in 1840 by his Grace the Duke of Buccleuch on a commanding site at the head of the town. It is in the form of a Cross. The extreme length from east to west is 90 feet the width across the body of the church is 50 feet, the width of the transept is 75 feet, the height from the floor to the ceiling is 35 feet and the height of the steeple and spire to the top of the vane is 167 feet.
