[Situation] Betwixt the Rivers South & North Esk on the Eastern Side of the Co. [County] of Edinbro' [Edinburgh]. A small town on the banks of the North & South Esk, a little above their junction it consists of two long streets named the High Street and Back Street running parallel & communicating by thickly populated closes, the houses in the front Street are of a decent description & are chiefly used as shops and Offices there is a weekly Market on Thursdays but the principal article of sale is grain it being considered the greatest corn Market in Scotland, there are several Banks Churches & Schools in the town, also Gas Works Foundry, Tanneries &c and an almost hourly communication is kept up with Edinb. [Edinburgh] by railway omnibus, it contains about 5000 inhabitants not including the suburbs & is now a Burgh of Regality & its affairs managed by a Bailie & Eleven Trustees, the town is of no great antiquity being first mentioned in connection with Dalkeith Castle in the 14th Century, a detachment of puritan roundheads lay here under Gen [General] Monk in 1654 The Gen [General] had his head Quarters at the Castle. |
