[Situation] In the SE [South East] portion of the Co [County] of Edinburgh.
A parish in the south-eastern part of Edinburghshire. It is of an irregular oblong form stretching north-east and South-west and is bounded on the north-west by Temple; on the north-east by detached parts of Borthwick and Stow; and by Fala and Stow, on the South east by Stow and on the South or South-west by Innerleithen in Peeblesshire. It [its] greatest length from Blakeup Scar on the south-west to an angle beyond the point where the Edinburgh & Carlisle road enters it on the north-east is 7 1/2 miles; its greatest breadth from Mausley's hill on the north-west to Dewar hill on the South-east, is 4 1/2 miles, and its superficial area is computed to be between 23 1/2 and 24 Square miles. It is divided into two parts by Heriot Water, which in the upper district is distributed in numerous Small Streams and their tributary rills. Gala Water, rendered classical by Scottish song, rises on its north-western limit, flows two miles due east and then assuming a Southerly direction divides it for half a mile from the parish of Stow. Though the grounds on the lower part of Heriot Water are fertile and where when duly Cultivated yield an abundant produce, only about one tenth part of the parish is arable. The hills are for the most part covered with heath and unfit for Cultivation, but afford excellent pasture. F.P. [Following page ?] |

Parish of Heriot
Heriot Contd. [Continued]
There are no villages in the parish. The post office is at Fushie Bridge; about 7 miles distant. The parish Church situated on Heriot Water, was built in 1804.
The manor of Heriot belonged to the Morvilles, and next to the Lords of Galloway, and certainly was possessed by Roger De Quincey the Constable of Scotland. It subsequently came into the possession of Mark Ker, and of his heir, Robert, 2nd Earl of Lothian; and it is now distributed among seven proprietors, the chief among whom if the Earl of Stair, the patron. Heriot is in the presbytery of Dalkeith and Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale.

See Remark in Page 25
Ancient Camps or Forts are in several localities of scotland,
called Rings and although this object is called Roman
Rings yet from shape which was that of circular or
oval it appears to be an ancient British Camp or Hill
Fort. Captn [Captain] James R. E. [Royal Engineers] who examined on the ground
is of this opinion. - This remark applies also to the camp
in page 25.
Ext. [Extract] from Stat: Account [Statistical Account] of Stow.
These are remains of ancient Roman Camps on the farms of Muirhouse,
Stagehall, Craigend, Watherstone, nethershiels, Pirntation [Pirntaiton] & Hawtree [Halltree] [etc.]
They vary in size from half an Acre at Nethershiels to two acres as at
Muirhouse & Craigend. The larger ones are circular while the others are
oval. The smaller ones seem to have been points of observation extending
along the strath of the water for communicating with one another by signal
In clearing away the remains of the Camp on Muirhouse a few years ago
upwards of 1000 carts of stones were removed among which were found
several querns or hand Mills of stone (the greywacke of the district) circular
& a foot in diameter with a hole in the centre. Two fragments
of Freestone were picked up which had served as the upper mill stone. |

Ancient Camp or Forts are Sometimes Called "Rings" in different
localities of Scotland and although the above Camp or Fort is Called
"Roman Rings", yet from its Shape which appears to have been Circular
or Oval, may be inferred to have been a British "Camp" or "Hill Fort".
Captn [Captain] James R.E. [Royal Engineer] who examined it on the ground is of this opinion.
This Remark applies also to the Camp described in page 22 |

Parish of Stow
A large parish at the south eastern extremity of the Co. [County] of Edinburgh
covering an extent of nearly 60 square miles. While itself lying in
two counties, it is thus over a large extent of its boundary in contact
with three others. A detached pendicle of it considerably less than
a mile square lies a mile north of the most northerly part of the
main body: and is bounded on the south and west by Heriot. Its Edinburghshire
section consists of the narrow vale of Lugate, the greater Part of the deep
winding beautiful vale of the Gala, and a small part of the vale of
the Arnet. The whole Parish anciently bore the name of Wedale, or
"The vale of woe", and belonged to the Bishops of St. Andrews. Stow
is the only village in the Parish. There are five hamlets, Fountainhall,
Kylochyett, Caitha, Crosslee, and Whytbanklee, more generally known

in either direction. It is an ancient edifice, and
is of very remote origin. The stipend amounts to
