A parish in the S. [South] East portion of the Co [County] of Edinb [Edinburgh] about 6 miles in length by 4 miles in breadth, the general aspect of the parish is hilly when viewed from the Kirktown which is near the centre of the Parish. Borthwick, Crichton & Catcune , old castles are interesting objects in this parish and it also contains a number of neat gentlemen's residences and five villages. Freestone Limestone and Coal abound, the latter chiefly sent to the south country at prices from £0.10.0 to £0.6.0 p [per] ton. Considerable improvt [improvement] in Agriculture has of late taken place, notwithstanding the properties of some are very heavily burthened which impedes the bettering of the condition of the tenantry. Abridged Extract from the Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] 1839 and Fullartons Gazt. [Gazetteer] if Scotland.
