A large Old Castle on the estate of Black Castle the property of James Mackay Esqr. Stationer Edinburgh It is a strong stone building of apparently Great Antiquity. It is four storys High in good repair and now Occupied as a farm House by Mrs Hogg. there is a set of office houses and 700 Acres of ground attached to it, the offices are all in bad repair. of the date of its erection or by whom it was built nothing is known in the locality. It is said to have been the residence of Queen Mary for some short period during the day of her adversity and a small room in it is called Queen Mary's room & close by it is a stump of a tree Called "Queen Mary's Tree". the walls of the Castle are of considerable thickness and on the upper story are indented with Embrasurers.
