[South] by Crichton, Borthwick & Newbattle on the E. [East] by Haddingtonshire & on the W. [West] by Dalkeith & Newbattle. It is about 5 Miles in length & 3 in breadth, somewhat in the form of an hourglass being very narrow in the middle, there are neither mountains nor hills but the face of the Parish is very unequal. Coal. Limestone and Sandstone are abundant. A small section of the parish lies apart from the main body imbosomed in the parish of Crichton, in this section is Cakemuir Castle where Queen Mary is said to have occupd. [occupied] apartments when she escaped from Borthwick Castle in 1567. There are three villages & three schools & three or four handsome mansions occupd.
