A parish consisting of a main body and a Small detached district in the South of the County of Edinbur[gh] The main body is bounded on the N W. [North West] by PenicuiK and Carrington on the N E. [North East] and E. [East] by Borthwick on the S E [South East] by Heriot and on the South &. west by Peebleshire. The parish of Temple Comprehends the ancient ClerKington and the Chapelries of Moorfoot and Balantradoch.- ClerKington previous to the reformation was a vicarage under the monKs of Newbattle. - Moorfoot anciently and properly Morthwait - Comprehended the upper half of the vale of Gladhouse Water and was a chapelry establishe[d]by the Newbattle MonKs to whom the lands had been gifted The Chapelry of Balantradoch after the Suppression of the Knights Templars passed into the possession of the Knights of St. [Saint] John. - The three districts having been united after the reformation assumed their present name from the circumstances of the chapel of the Templars being adopted as their Common or parochial church. - |
