A parish in the County of Edinburgh about 10 miles in length and about 5 1/2 in breadth It is bounded on the north by Mid Calder and Livingston. On the west by Whitburn On the South by Carnwath and on the east by Glencross. The term West has been applied to this parish on account of it lying westward of the river Calder. According to Chalmers the present parishes of West Calder and Mid Calder were comprehended in the barony & parish of Calder Comitis. It was known by this name as early as the 12th century. It was divided in 1646 & made two distinct parishes. The old church was appropriated to Mid Calder & a new church created for West Calder
