014 A village 1/2 mile in length built upon the face of a hill on the sides of the public road leading from "Edinbr" [Edinburgh] to "Lauder" 11 miles from the former place. it was once principally inhabited by Colliers. but owing to the cessation of coal works in the vicinity comparatively few remain its population is about [blank]. shopkeepers. rural artisans & farm laborers it has a post office and a Free Church with a school attached. the ground of the village is feud from Capt. [Captain] Callender of Preston Hall. & the houses to numerous proprietors. it is most generally spelt Path Head.
